Adolf Hitler became the dictator of Germany after the earlier president died. Hitler was chancellor of Germany before he gained complete control of the country. Hitler was responsible for the death of around 6 million Jews over the course of about 4 years. Hitler was a nationalist, militarist, racist, and anti-Semite, Hitler became Chancellor of Germany in 1933 and quickly changed Germany into a totalitarian fascist state. His efforts to build a territorially larger and ethnically purer fatherland for the German people ended in world war and Holocaust. Hitler retained power in Germany until his suicide just before Germany's surrenderd in 1945.
In May 1938, Mussolini promised to fight alongside Adolf Hitler in any war against the democracies of the world. His armies, however, poorly led and ill-prepared for war, were defeated quickly by Allied forces. Italian resistance to his dictatorship ultimately led to his fall from power and to his death; Mussolini was overthrown in 1943, and in April 1945, Italian insurgents captured the ex-dictator, murdered him, and mutilated his body—a disgraceful end for a man who considered himself to be the savior of the Italian nation.
Hideki Tojo was the Army general and prime minister who led Japan through much of World War II and was later executed as a war criminal. In the 1930s, Hideki Tojo fought in the Sino-Japanese war, leading Japanese forces in occupied Manchuria. He returned to Tokyo in 1940 and held ministerial posts, where he tried for an alliance with Germany and Italy against the Allied forces. Tojo became Japan's Prime Minister in 1941 and within two months ordered a surprise attack on U.S. naval forces in Hawaii. Tojo served as the political and military leader of Japan until 1944, when it was clear the direction of the war had changed for the worse. He was forced to resign, which he did on July 18th, 1944. After the war he attempted suicide by shooting himself in the chest, but he was found by American soldiers and his life was saved. He was tried by a post-war military tribunal, which found Tojo guilty of war crimes. He was executed by hanging on December 23rd, 1948
